This dainty little bookmark (right) could easily be lengthened into a colorful sash or scarf (left). The pattern will work for any even number of stitches, but use the recommended crochet thread and 22 stitches if you want the colors in the bookmark to do their wave thing. The stitch used is a variation of Brioche stitch. It is a bit tricky to get started, but knits up quickly once you catch on.
SIZE: Bookmark is about 3.25 inches wide, 14 inches long when blocked.
MATERIALSfor bookmark: One ball of Sara’s Colorwave #10 crochet threadand #1 knitting needles. MATERIALS for scarf: Any soft yarn, and knitting needles a size or two smaller than what you would normally use for it. The scarf at in the photo at left was made with Lang Venezia mohair acrylic blend, with # 4 needles. GAUGE: not critical
Cast on 22 stitches (or any even number) very loosely.
Prep row (do this only once): *YO S K1* In other words, bring the yarn toward you, in front of your work (YO or yarn over). Insert your needle into the next stitch as if to purl and slip it to the right needle (S). Then as you knit the next stitch (K1), wrap the yarn over the right needle and to the back. For the next stitch bring the yarn forward again between the needles, slip as if to purl, and knit the next stitch while wrapping the yarn to the back. Repeat to the end. Now you will have 33 stitches.
Row 1: *Purl 1, skip the next stitch, knit the YO from the previous row but don’t slide it off the LH needle, then knit the stitch you skipped and slide them both off together*
Row 2: *YO S K2tog* Do the same as in the prep row, but knit two stitches together (K2tog): both the next stitch and the wrap (YO) from the previous row are knitted together.
Repeat these two rows until your bookmark/scarf is the desired length. Bind off loosely in *K1 K2tog*. Darn in ends. Steam iron and starch the bookmark so it doesn’t roll, or block scarf.
