SIZE: About 5 inches wide. One hank of yarn will make a scarf over 5 feet long.
MATERIALS: Sara’s Colorwave Yarn, about 4 ounces of wool or alpaca. Directions for fingering (sock) weight are given, sport/DK and worsted weight wool are in parentheses. Knitting needles size 6 (7, 8) (you may wish to adjust the needle size up or down to get the color effects you desire).
Cast on 22 (20, 18) stitches (or any even number) very loosely.
Prep row (do this only once): *YO S K1* In other words, bring the yarn toward you, in front of your work (YO or yarn over). Insert your needle into the next stitch as if to purl and slip it to the right needle (S). Then as you knit the next stitch (K1), wrap the yarn over the right needle and to the back. For the next stitch bring the yarn forward again between the needles, slip as if to purl, and knit the next stitch while wrapping the yarn to the back. Repeat to the end.
All other rows: *YO S K2tog* Do the same as above, but knit two stitches together (K2tog): both the next stitch and the wrap (YO) from the previous row are knitted together.
After you have knit an inch or two from the beginning, you may wish to adjust the colors so that they pool up. Examine the colors of the scarf ribs, the little stacks of V’s (this is the place where you do the K2tog). If the color bands on the ribs slant upward to the left, try going up a needle size (it won’t be noticeable). As an alternative, you could rip out what you have and start over with more stitches (multiples of 2 only). If the color bands slant upward to the right (they do this in the picture), try going down a needle size, or start over with fewer stitches.
Keep knitting the pattern row until your scarf is the desired length, or until you have only about one more yard of yarn remaining. Bind off loosely in *K1 K2tog*.
