OSTRICH PLUME SCARF
By Sara Baldwin ©2007

SIZE:  About 9 inches wide. One hank of yarn will make a scarf over 6 feet long.

MATERIALS:  Knitting needles size 4, and one hank of SARA'S COLORWAVE YARN, lace weight
wool or cotton.

GAUGE:   not critical.         Cast on 59 stitches*.

Rows 1-4:  Bring the yarn to the front, slip the first stitch, return yarn to back, and knit the remaining
stitches. This will make a garter stitch border.

Rows 5, 9, 13, and 17: Bring the yarn to the front, slip the first stitch as if to purl, return yarn to back,
k 4, (K2tog) 3 times, *(YO k1) five times, YO, SSK twice, SK2P, K2tog twice*, repeat from * one more
time, (YO k1) five times, YO, SSK three times, k 5.

Row 6 and all other even numbered rows: Bring the yarn to the front, slip the first stitch as if to purl,
return yarn to back, knit 3, purl to within 4 stitches from the end of the row, and knit the remaining 4
stitches.

Rows 7, 11, 15, and 19: Bring the yarn to the front, slip the first stitch as if to purl, return yarn to
back, and knit the remaining stitches.

Rows 21, 25, 29, and 33: Bring the yarn to the front, slip the first stitch as if to purl, return yarn to
back, k 5, (YO k1) twice, YO, *SSK twice, SK2P, K2tog twice, (YO, k1) five times, YO* repeat from *
one more time, SSK twice, SK2P, K2tog twice, (YO, k1) twice, YO, k 6.

Rows 23, 27, 31, and 35: Repeat Row 7.

Repeat rows 5-36, which form the pattern stitch for the scarf. When the scarf is the desired length,
repeat rows 1-4 for the end border. Bind off all stitches. Block scarf severely!

*If the colors in the scarf are coming out too stripey and you would like them to pool together a bit
more, try adding (or deleting) a stitch or two in each garter stitch border at the side edges of the scarf.
Watch for the colors to puddle near the center of the scarf. The goal is to cause the number of rows
of the same color near the center to of the scarf to increase.
